NYC Polystyrene Ban: Alternatives for Restaurants and Businesses

New York City has now joined Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. with the ban of polystyrene containers within city limits due to the largely negative environmental impacts and hazards it poses.

Starting July 1, 2015 this policy will go into effect leaving restaurants, food trucks, carts, organizations and packing industries to find more eco-friendly substitutes. It will be illegal to produce and retail Styrofoam products including cups, dinner boxes, and packing peanuts.

New York City’s Sanitation Department alone accounted for 28,500 tons of polystyrene waste. Not only is this an issue for the environment, but the chemicals in these Styrofoam containers can also leach into food, which can make sensitive individuals sick and clearly has negative health effects.

With the passing of this law companies in New York and other major cities are now looking for alternatives to replace Styrofoam packaging in their business. Be Green Packaging is the world’s leading manufacturer of biodegradable and recyclable packaging made from sustainable, eco-friendly plant fibers and designed specifically for restaurants, food vendors and consumer product companies.
